This du’a is narrated on the authority of Imam Musa al-Kazim, peace he upon him, and it is said that it is a very effective supplication, having all the merits of al Jawshan al Kabir.” Sayyid ibn Tawus in his book Muhaj al dawat have narrated that Imam Kazim (a.s.) used to recite this dua when he knew that the Abbaside caliph was planning to kill him”

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ | bismi all¡hi alrra¦m¡ni alrra¦¢mi | In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.1 |
إِلٰهِي كَم مِنْ عَدُوٍّ | il¡h¢ kam min `aduwwin | O my God, many an enemy |
ٱنتَضَىٰ عَلَيَّ سَيْفَ عَدَاوَتِهِ | inta¤¡ `alayya sayfa `ad¡watih¢ | unsheathed the sword of his hostility against me, |
وَشَحَذَ لِي ظُبَّةَ مُدْيَتِهِ | wa sha¦adha l¢ ¨ubbata mudyatih¢ | honed his dagger’s edge against me, |
وَارْهَفَ لِي شَبَا حَدِّهُ | wa arhafa l¢ shab¡ ¦addih¢ | sharpened the heads of his weapons against me, |
وَدَافَ لِي قَوَاتِلَ سُمُومِهِ | wa d¡fa l¢ qaw¡tila sum£mih¢ | mixed for me his deadly poisons, |
وَسَدَّدَ إِلَيَّ صَوَائِبَ سِهَامِهِ | wa saddada ilayya ¥aw¡’iba sih¡mih¢ | leveled at me his hitting arrow, |
وَلَمْ تَنَمْ عَنِّي عَيْنُ حِرَاسَتِهِ | wa lam tanam `ann¢ `aynu ¦ir¡satih¢ | kept a sleepless eye on me, |
وَاضْمَرَ انْ يَسُومَنِي ٱلْمَكْرُوهَ | wa a¤mara an yas£man¢ almakr£ha | and decided secretly to target harm to me |
وَيُجَرِّعَنِي ذُعَافَ مَرَارَتِهِ | wa yujarri`an¢ dhu`¡fa mar¡ratih¢ | and to make me taste the deadly poison of his bitterness. |
نَظَرْتَ إِلَىٰ ضَعْفِي عَنِ ٱحْتِمَاِل ٱلْفَوَاِدحِ | na¨arta il¡ ¤a`f¢ `an i¦tim¡li alfaw¡di¦i | [Amid all that] You considered that I am too weak to bear hardships, |
وَعَجْزِي عَنِ ٱلإِنتِصَارِ مِمَّن قَصَدَنِي بِمُحَارَبَتِهِ | wa `ajz¢ `an al-inti¥¡ri mimman qa¥adan¢ bimu¦¡rabatih¢ | I am too short to have aid against him who aimed at attacking me, |
وَوَحْدَتِي فِي كَثِيرٍ مِمَّنْ نَاوَانِي وَارْصَدَ لِي | wa wa¦dat¢ f¢ kath¢rin mimman n¡w¡n¢ wa ar¥ada l¢ | and You perceived my loneliness to confront many of those who incurred my hostility and laid in wait for me, |
فِيمَا لَمْ اعْمِلْ فِكْرِي فِي ٱلإِرْصَادِ لَهُم بِمِثْلِهِ | f¢m¡ lam u`mil fikr¢ f¢ al-ir¥¡di lahum bimithlih¢ | while I have not been ready to give any thought to sitting in ambush and retaliating. |
فَايَّدْتَنِي بِقُوَّتِكَ | fa ayyadtan¢ biquwwatika | So, You came to stand by me with Your might, |
وَشَدَدْتَ ازْرِي بِنُصْرَتِكَ | wa shadadta azr¢ binu¥ratika | made me strong through Your support, |
وَفَلَلْتَ لِي حَدَّهُ | wa falalta l¢ ¦addah£ | notched his sharpness against me, |
وَخَذَلْتَهُ بَعْدَ جَمْعِ عَدِيدِهِ وَحَشْدِهِ | wa khadhaltah£ ba`da jam`i `ad¢dih¢ wa ¦ashdih¢ | disappointed him although he concentrated all his troops and crowds, |
وَاعْلَيْتَ كَعْبِي عَلَيْهِ | wa a`layta ka`b¢ `alayhi | You gave me the upper hand over him, |
وَوَجَّهْتَ مَا سَدَّدَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ مَكَائِدِهِ إِلَيْهِ | wa wajjahta m¡ saddada ilayya min mak¡’idih¢ ilayhi | directed toward him the same traps that he had laid for me, |
وَرَدَدْتَهُ عَلَيْهِ | wa radadtah£ `alayhi | and caused him to be engaged with his own traps. |
وَلَمْ يَشْفِ غَلِيلَهُ | wa lam yashfi ghal¢lah£ | Thus, he could not quench his thirst, |
وَلَمْ تَبْرُدْ حَزَازَاتُ غَيْظِهِ | wa lam tabrud ¦az¡z¡tu ghay¨ih¢ | did not assuage the fury of his anger, |
وَقَدْ عَضَّ عَلَيَّ انَامِلَهُ | wa qad `a¤¤a `alayya an¡milah£ | bit his thumb [out of his malice toward me], |
وَادْبَرَ مُوَلِّياً قَدْ اخْفَقَتْ سَرَايَاهُ | wa adbara muwalliyan qad akhfaqat sar¡y¡hu | and turned his back fleeing after his pennons had failed. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
2 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَكَمْ مِنْ بَاغٍ | il¡h¢ wa kam min b¡ghin | O my God, many a tyrannical oppressor |
بَغَانِي بِمَكَائِدِهِ | bagh¡n¢ bimak¡’idih¢ | made me the target of his oppressive trickeries, |
وَنَصَبَ لِي اشْرَاكَ مَصَائِدِهِ | wa na¥aba l¢ ashr¡ka ma¥¡’idih¢ | set the traps of his hunting for me, |
وَوَكَّلَ بِي تَفَقُّدَ رِعَايَتِهِ | wa wakkala b¢ tafaqquda ri`¡yatih¢ | continuously spied on me, |
وَاضْبَا إِلَيَّ إِضْبَاءَ ٱلسَّبْعِ لِطَرِيدَتِهِ | wa a¤ba’a ilayya i¤b¡’a alssabu`i li§ar¢datih¢ | and waylaid me like a beast waylaying its prey |
إنتِظَاراً لاِنْتِهَازِ فُرْصَتِهِ | inti¨¡ran lintih¡zi fur¥atih¢ | in waiting for seizing the best opportunity [to catch me], |
وَهُوَ يُظْهِرُ بَشَاشَةَ ٱلْمَلَقِ | wa huwa yu¨hiru bash¡shata almalaqi | While he was showing me happy mien flatteringly |
وَيَبْسُطُ وَجْهاً غَيْرَ طَلِقٍ | wa yabsu§u wajhan ghayra §aliqin | and displaying an uncheerful face. |
فَلَمَّا رَايْتَ دَغَلَ سَرِيرَتِهِ | falamm¡ ra’ayta daghala sar¢ratih¢ | So, when You saw ill intention of his inner self |
وَقُبْحَ مَا ٱنطَوَىٰ عَلَيْهِ لِشَرِيكِهِ فِي مِلَّتِهِ | wa qub¦a m¡ in§aw¡ `alayhi lishar¢kih¢ f¢ millatih¢ | and the ugliness of his determination against his partner in religion, |
وَاصْبَحَ مُجْلِباً لِي فِي بَغْيِهِ | wa a¥ba¦a mujliban l¢ f¢ baghyih¢ | and he became resolute in tyranny against me, |
ارْكَسْتَهُ لاِمِّ رَاسِهِ | arkastah£ li’ummi ra’sih¢ | You threw him down headlong |
وَاتَيْتَ بُنيَانَهُ مِنْ اسَاسِهِ | wa atayta buny¡nah£ min as¡sih¢ | and demolished his structure from its foundation. |
فَصَرَعْتَهُ فِي زُبْيَتِهِ | fa¥ara`tah£ f¢ zubyatih¢ | So, You knocked him down while he was in loftiness, |
وَرَدَّيْتَهُ فِي مَهْوَىٰ حُفْرَتِهِ | wa raddaytah£ f¢ mahw¡ ¦ufratih¢ | made him fall in the bottomless depth of his hole, |
وَجَعَلْتَ خَدَّهُ طَبَقاً لِتُرَابِ رِجْلِهِ | wa ja`alta khaddahu §abaqan litur¡bi rijlih¢ | caused his face to be a cover of his foot’s dust, |
وَشَغَلْتَهُ فِي بَدَنِهِ وَرِزْقِهِ | wa shaghaltah£ f¢ badanih¢ wa rizqih¢ | caused him to be engaged with his body and his earnings, |
وَرَمَيْتَهُ بِحَجَرِهِ | wa ramaytah£ bi¦ajarih¢ | hurled him with his own stone, |
وَخَنَقْتَهُ بِوَتَرِهِ | wa khanaqtah£ biwatarih¢ | suffocated him with his own rope, |
وَذَكَّيْتَهُ بِمَشَاقِصِهِ | wa dhakkaytah£ bimash¡qi¥ih¢ | slaughtered him with his own arrowhead, |
وَكَبَبْتَهُ لِمِنْخَرِهِ | wa kababtah£ limankhirih¢ | overturned him to his nose, |
وَرَدَدْتَ كَيْدَهُ فِي نَحْرِهِ | wa radadta kaydah£ f¢ na¦rih¢ | turned his plot to his own neck, |
وَرَبَقْتَهُ بِنَدَامَتِهِ | wa rabaqtah£ binad¡matih¢ | lassoed him with his remorse, |
وَفَسَاتَهُ بِحَسْرَتِهِ | wa fasa’tah£ bi¦asratih¢ | and stretched him with is regret. |
فَٱسْتَخْذَا وَتَضَاءَلَ بَعْدَ نَخْوَتِهِ | fastakhdha’a wa ta¤¡’ala ba`da nakhwatih¢ | So, he became lowly and dwindled after his arrogance, |
وَٱنقَمَعَ بَعْدَ ٱسْتِطَالَتِهِ | wanqama`a ba`da isti§¡latih¢ | was crushed after his haughtiness; |
ذَلِيلاً مَاسُوراً فِي رِبْقِ حِبَالَتِهِ | dhal¢lan ma’s£ran f¢ ribqi ¦ib¡latih¢ | humble and captured in the lasso of his trap |
ٱلَّتِي كَانَ يُؤَمِّلُ انْ يَرَانِي فِيهَا يَوْمَ سَطْوَتِهِ | allat¢ k¡na yu’ammilu an yar¡n¢ f¢h¡ yawma sa§watih¢ | in which he expected to see me in the days of his influence. |
وَقَدْ كِدْتُ يَا رَبِّ لَوْلاَ رَحْمَتُكَ | wa qad kidtu y¡ rabbi lawl¡ ra¦matuka | In fact, O my Lord, I was—had it not been for Your mercy— |
انْ يَحِلَّ بِي مَا حَلَّ بِسَاحَتِهِ | an ya¦ulla b¢ m¡ ¦alla bis¡¦atih¢ | about to encounter the same as he had encountered. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
3 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَكَمْ مِنْ حَاسِدٍ شَرِقَ بِحَسْرَتِهِ | il¡h¢ wa kam min ¦¡sidin shariqa bi¦asratih¢ | O my God, many an envier choked with his regret |
وَعَدُوٍّ شَجِيَ بِغَيْظِهِ | wa `aduwwin shajiya bighay¨ih¢ | and an enemy became grieved out of his fury, |
وَسَلَقَنِي بِحَدِّ لِسَانِهِ | wa salaqan¢ bi¦addi lis¡nih¢ | smit me with his sharp tongue, |
وَوَخَزَنِي بِمُوقِ عَيْنِهِ | wa wakhazan¢ bim£qi `aynih¢ | pricked me with the inner corner of his eye, |
وَجَعَلَنِي غَرَضاً لِمَرَامِيهِ | wa ja`alan¢ ghara¤an limar¡m¢hi | made me the object of his intentions, |
وَقَلَّدَنِي خِلاَلاً لَمْ تَزَلْ فِيهِ | wa qalladan¢ khil¡lan lam tazal f¢hi | and gird me with dispositions that are still his. |
نَاديْتُكَ يَا رَبِّ مُسْتَجِيراً بِكَ | n¡daytuka y¡ rabbi mustaj¢ran bika | Therefore, I called upon You, O my Lord, seeking Your shelter, |
وَاثِقاً بِسُرْعَةِ إِجَابَتِكَ | w¡thiqan bisur`ati ij¡batika | having full confidence in the immediateness of Your response, |
مُتَوَكِّلاً عَلَىٰ مَا لَمْ ازَلْ اتَعَرَّفُهُ | mutawakkilan `al¡ m¡lam azal ata`arrafuh£ | trusting in that which I am still receiving from You; |
مِن حُسْنِ دِفَاعِكَ | min ¦usni dif¡`ika | namely, the excellence of Your defense of me, |
عَالِماً انَّهُ لاَ يُضْطَهَدُ مَنْ اوَىٰ إِلَىٰ ظِلِّ كَنَفِكَ | `¡liman annah£ l¡ yu¤§ahadu man aw¡ il¡ ¨illi kanafika | having full knowledge that whoever harbors under the shade of Your protection will never be persecuted, |
وَلَن تَقْرَعَ ٱلْحَوَادِثُ مَنْ لَجَا إِلَىٰ مَعْقِلِ ٱلاِنْتِصَارِ بِكَ | wa lan taqra`a al¦aw¡dithu man laja’a il¡ ma`qili al-inti¥¡ri bika | and whoever takes refuge in the fortress of the seeking of Your support will never be exposed to the strikes of misfortunes. |
فَحَصَّنْتَنِي مِنْ بَاسِهِ بِقُدْرَتِكَ | fa¦a¥¥antan¢ min ba’sih¢ biqudratika | So, You safeguarded me from his prowess with Your omnipotence. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
4 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَكَمْ مِنْ سَحَائِبِ مَكْرُوهٍ جَلَّيْتَهَا | il¡h¢ wa kam min sa¦¡’ibi makr£hin jallaytah¡ | O my God, many clouds of misfortune You have dispersed, |
وَسَمَاءِ نِعْمَةٍ مَطَرْتَهَا | wa sam¡’i ni`matin ma§artah¡ | much rain of bliss You have poured, |
وَجَدَاوِلِ كَرَامَةٍ اجْرَيْتَهَا | wa jad¡wili kar¡matin ajraytah¡ | many streams of conferral You have made flow, |
وَاعْيُنِ احْدَاثٍ طَمَسْتَهَا | wa a`yuni a¦d¡thin §amastah¡ | many springs of troubles You have effaced, |
وَنَاشِئَةِ رَحْمَةٍ نشَرْتَهَا | wa n¡shi’ati ra¦matin nashartah¡ | many launches of mercy You have spread, |
وَجُنَّةِ عَافِيَةٍ الْبَسْتَهَا | wa junnati `¡fiyatin albastah¡ | many armors of wellbeing You have adorned [us with], |
وَغَوَامِرِ كُرُبَاتٍ كَشَفْتَهَا | wa ghaw¡miri kurub¡tin kashaftah¡ | many overwhelming calamities You have removed, |
وَامُورٍ جَارِيَةٍ قَدَّرْتَهَا | wa um£rin j¡riyatin qaddartah¡ | and many continual events of goodness You have decided. |
لَمْ تُعْجِزْكَ إِذْ طَلَبْتَهَا | lam tu`jizka idh §alabtah¡ | They would never render You impotent when You determined them to happen, |
وَلَمْ تَمْتَنِعْ مِنْكَ إِذْ ارَدْتَهَا | wa lam tamtani` minka idh aradtah¡ | and could never stop responding to You when You wanted them to be. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |

وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
5 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَكَمْ مِنْ ظَنٍّ حَسَنٍ حَقَّقْتَ | il¡h¢ wa kam min ¨annin ¦asanin ¦aqqaqta | O my God, many an excellent hope You have achieved, |
وَمِن كَسْرِ إِمْلاَقٍ جَبَرْتَ | wa min kasri iml¡qin jabarta | many breaking poverty You have set, |
وَمِن مَسْكَنَةٍ فَادِحَةٍ حَوَّلْتَ | wa min maskanatin f¡di¦atin ¦awwalta | many gross neediness You have shunted, |
وَمِن صَرْعَةٍ مُهْلِكَةٍ نعَشْتَ | wa min ¥ar`atin muhlikatin na`ashta | many destructive blows You have revived (me from them), |
وَمِن مَشَقَّةٍ ارَحْتَ | wa min mashaqqatin ara¦ta | and many hardships You have relieved (me of them). |
لاَ تُسْالُ عَمَّا تَفْعَلُ | l¡ tus’alu `amm¡ taf`alu | You cannot be questioned concerning that which You do |
وَهُمْ يُسْالُونَ | wa hum yus’al£na | and they shall be questioned. |
وَلاَ يَنقُصُكَ مَا انفَقْتَ | wa l¡ yanqu¥uka m¡ anfaqta | That which You spend never decreases You. |
وَلَقَدْ سُئِلْتَ فَاعْطَيْتَ | wa laqad su’ilta fa’a`§ayta | When You have been besought, You gave; |
وَلَمْ تُسْالْ فَٱبْتَدَاتَ | wa lam tus’al fabtada’ta | and although You have not been besought, You took the initiative to give. |
وَٱسْتُمِيحَ بَابُ فَضْلِكَ فَمَا اكْديْتَ | wastum¢¦a b¡bu fa¤lika fam¡ akdayta | When the door of Your favoring was knocked, You have not withheld. |
ابَيْتَ إِلاَّ إِنْعَاماً وَامْتِنَاناً | abayta ill¡ in`¡man wa imtin¡nan | You have insisted on nothing but favoring and bestowal |
وَابَيْتَ إِلاَّ تَطَوُّلاً يَا رَبِّ وَإِحْسَاناً | wa abayta ill¡ ta§awwulan y¡ rabbi wa i¦s¡nan | and You, O my Lord, have also insisted on giving generously and beneficently. |
وَابَيْتُ إِلاَّ ٱنتِهَاكاً لِحُرُمَاتِكَ | wa abaytu ill¡ intih¡kan li¦urum¡tika | But as for me, I insisted on nothing but violation of Your prohibitions, |
وَٱجْتِرَاءاً عَلَىٰ مَعَاصِيكَ | wa ijtir¡’an `al¡ ma`¡¥¢ka | daring to commit acts of disobedience to You, |
وَتَعَدِّياً لِحُدُودِكَ | wa ta`adiyyan li¦ud£dika | transgressing Your limits, |
وَغَفْلَةً عَنْ وَعِيدِكَ | wa ghaflatan `an wa`¢dika | passing over Your threats, |
وَطَاعَةً لِعَدُوِّي وَعَدُوِّكَ | wa §¡`atan li`aduww¢ wa `aduwwika | and obeying Your and my enemy. |
لَمْ يَمْنَعْكَ يَا إِلٰهِي وَنَاصِرِي إِخْلاَلِي بِٱلشُّكْرِ | lam yamna`ka y¡ il¡h¢ wa n¡¥ir¢ ikhl¡l¢ bilshshukri | My failure to be thankful to You has not made You, O my God and Helper, |
عَنْ إِتْمَامِ إِحْسَانِكَ | `an itm¡mi i¦s¡nika | stop perfecting Your favors on me. |
وَلاَ حَجَزَنِي ذٰلِكَ عَنِ ٱرْتِكَابِ مَسَاخِطِكَ | wa l¡ ¦ajazan¢ dh¡lika `an irtik¡bi mas¡khi§ika | Likewise, this has not prevented me from committing sins that You dislike. |
اَللَّهُمَّ وَهٰذَا مَقَامُ عَبْدٍ ذَلِيلٍ | all¡humma wa h¡dh¡ maq¡mu `abdin dhal¢lin | O my God, this is the situation of a humble servant [of You], |
ٱعْتَرَفَ لَكَ بِٱلتَّوْحِيدِ | i`tarafa laka bilttaw¦¢di | who professes Your Oneness, |
وَاقَرَّ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ بِٱلتَّقْصِيرِ فِي ادَاءِ حَقِّكَ | wa aqarra `al¡ nafsih¢ bilttaq¥¢ri f¢ ad¡’i ¦aqqika | confesses of his failure to carry out his duty towards You, |
وَشَهِدَ لَكَ بِسُبُوغِ نِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيْهِ | wa shahida laka bisub£ghi ni`matika `alayhi | and testifies to Your ample favoring on him, |
وَجَمِيلِ عَادَتِكَ عِندَهُ | wa jam¢li `¡datika `indah£ | Your excellent habits in treating him, |
وَإِحْسَانِكَ إِلَيْهِ | wa i¦s¡nika ilayhi | and Your bestowal of graces upon him. |
فَهَبْ لِي يَا إِلٰهِي وَسَيِّدِي مِنْ فَضْلِكَ | fahab l¢ y¡ il¡h¢ wa sayyid¢ min fa¤lika | So, my God and Master, confer upon me an amount of Your benevolence |
مَا ارِيدُهُ سَبَباً إِلَىٰ رَحْمَتِكَ | m¡ ur¢duh£ sababan il¡ ra¦matika | that I can use as a path taking me to Your mercy, |
وَاتَّخِذُهُ سُلَّماً اعْرُجُ فِيهِ إِلَىٰ مَرْضَاتِكَ | wa attakhidhuh£ sullaman a`ruju f¢h il¡ mar¤¡tika | as a ladder by which I ascend to Your satisfaction, |
وَآمَنُ بِهِ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ | wa ¡manu bih¢ min sakha§ika | and I can be secured from Your wrath |
بِعِزَّتِكَ وَطَوْلِكَ | bi`izzatika wa §awlika | in the name of Your might and supremacy |
وَبِحَقِّ نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ | wa bi¦aqqi nabiyyika Muhammadin | and in the name of Your Prophet, Muhammad, |
صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ | ¥all¡ all¡hu `alayhi wa ¡lih¢ | may Your blessings be upon him and his Household. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
6 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ | il¡h¢ wa kam min `abdin | My God, many a servant [of You] |
امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ فِي كَرْبِ ٱلْمَوْتِ | ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a f¢ karbi almawti | is in eves and morns suffering the agony of death, |
وَحَشْرَجَةِ ٱلصَّدْرِ | wa ¦ashrajati al¥¥adri | and the rattles of death, |
وَٱلنَّظَرِ إِلىٰ مَا تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ ٱلْجُلُودُ | walnna¨ari il¡ m¡ taqsha`irru minhu aljul£du | experiencing that which shudders the skins |
وَتَفْزَعُ لَهُ ٱلْقُلُوبُ | wa tafza`u lah£ alqul£bu | and horrifies the hearts; |
وَانَا فِي عَافِيَةٍ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | wa an¡ f¢ `¡fiyatin min dh¡lika kullih¢ | but I am safe from all that. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
إِلٰهِي وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ | il¡h¢ wa kam min `abdin | My God, many a servant [of You] |
امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ سَقِيماً مُوجَعاً | ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a saq¢man m£ja`an | is in eves and morns ailing and feeling pain |
فِي انَّةٍ وَعَوِيلٍ | f¢ annatin wa `aw¢lin | with moans and wails, |
يَتَقَلَّبُ فِي غَمِّهِ | yataqallabu f¢ ghammih¢ | and is rolling over and over with anguish; |
لاَ يَجِدُ مَحِيصاً | l¡ yajidu ma¦¢¥an | neither finding any way of escaping it |
وَلاَ يُسِيغُ طَعَاماً وَلاَ شَرَاباً | wa l¡ yus¢ghu §a`¡man wa l¡ shar¡ban | nor is he finding the taste of any food or drink; |
وَانَا فِي صِحَّةٍ مِنَ ٱلْبَدَنِ | wa an¡ f¢ ¥i¦¦atin mina albadani | while I am enjoying body health |
وَسَلاَمَةٍ مِنَ ٱلْعَيْشِ | wa sal¡matin mina al`ayshi | and safe living. |
كُلُّ ذٰلِكَ مِنْكَ | kullu dh¡lika minka | All that [wellbeing] is from You. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
إِلٰهِي وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ | il¡h¢ wa kam min `abdin | O my God, many a servant [of You] |
امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ خَائِفاً مَرْعُوباً | ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a kh¡’ifan mar`£ban | is in eves and morns fearful, frightened, |
مُشْفِقاً وَجِلاً | mushfiqan wajilan | terrified, scared, |
هَارِباً طَرِيداً | h¡riban §ar¢dan | fugitive, runaway, |
مُنجَحِراً فِي مَضِيقٍ | munja¦iran f¢ ma¤¢qin | hiding in a tight burrow |
وَمَخْبَاةٍ مِنَ المَخَابِئِ | wa makhba’atin mina almakh¡bi’i | or in an ordinary den; |
قَدْ ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِ ٱلارْضُ بِرُحْبِهَا | qad ¤¡qat `alayhi al-ar¤u biru¦bih¡ | while the entire spacious earth has become too narrow to secure him a place. |
لاَ يَجِدُ حِيلَةً | l¡ yajidu ¦¢latan | He thus cannot devise any plan |
وَلاَ مَنجىٰ وَلاَ مَاوىٰ | wa l¡ manj¡ wa l¡ mawan | or find any shelter or retreat. |
وَانَا فِي امْنٍ وَطُمَانِينَةٍ وَعَافِيَةٍ | wa an¡ f¢ amnin wa §uma’n¢natin wa `¡fiyatin | While I am living in security, tranquility, and good health; |
مِن ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | min dh¡lika kullih¢ | all of which is from You. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
7 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَسَيِّدِي | il¡h¢ wa sayyid¢ | O my God and Master, |
وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ | wa kam min `abdin | many a servant [of You] |
امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ مَغْلُولاً | ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a maghl£lan | is in eves and morns enchained |
مُكَبَّلاً فِي ٱلْحَدِيدِ | mukabbalan f¢ al¦ad¢di | and shackled in iron shackles |
بِايْدِي ٱلْعُدَاةِ لاَ يَرْحَمُونَهُ | bi-ayd¢ al`udati l¡ yar¦am£nah£ | in the hands of his enemies whom show him no mercy; |
فَقِيداً مِنْ اهْلِهِ وَوَلَدِهِ | faq¢dan min ahlih¢ wa waladih¢ | [and he is] separated from his family members and children |
مُنقَطِعاً عَنْ إِخْوَانِهِ وَبَلَدِهِ | munqa§i`an `an ikhw¡nih¢ wa baladih¢ | and detached from his friends and country; |
يَتَوَقَّعُ كُلَّ سَاعَةٍ بِايِّ قَتْلَةٍ يُقْتَلُ | yatawaqqa`u kulla s¡`atin bi-ayyi qitlatin yuqtalu | each hour, he wonders what kind of killing he will be killed |
وَبِايِّ مُثْلَةٍ يُمَثَّلُ بِهِ | wa bi-ayyi muthlatin yumaththalu bih¢ | and what kind of mutilation he will be mutilated. |
وَانَا فِي عَافِيَةٍ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | wa an¡ f¢ `¡fiyatin min dh¡lika kullih¢ | But I am safe from all this. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
8 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ | il¡h¢ wa kam min `abdin | My God, many a servant [of You] |
امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ يُقَاسِي ٱلْحَرْبَ | ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a yuq¡s¢ al¦arba | is in eves and morns contending in war, |
وَمُبَاشَرَةِ ٱلْقِتَاِل بِنَفْسِهِ | wa mub¡sharata alqit¡li binafsih¢ | conducting the fighting by himself, |
قَدْ غَشِيَتْهُ ٱلاعْدَاءُ مِنْ كُلِّ جَانِبٍ | qad ghashiyat-hu al-a`d¡’u min kulli j¡nibin | and is surrounded by enemies from all sides |
بِٱلسُّيُوفِ وَٱلرِّمَاحِ وَآلَةِ ٱلْحَرْبِ | bilssuy£fi walrrim¡¦i wa ¡lati al¦arbi | with swords, spears, and instruments of wars. |
يَتَقَعْقَعُ فِي ٱلْحَدِيدِ | yataqa`qa`u f¢ al¦ad¢di | He is trembling inside iron [i.e. his armor], |
قَدْ بَلَغَ مَجْهُودَهُ | qad balagha majh£dah£ | and trying desperately to do everything possible. |
لاَ يَعْرِفُ حِيلَةً | l¡ ya`rifu ¦¢latan | He cannot find any further means |
وَلاَ يَجِدُ مَهْرَباً | wa l¡ yajidu mahraban | and cannot find any escape. |
قَدْ ادْنِفَ بِٱلْجِرَاحَاتِ | qad udnifa biljir¡¦¡ti | He is seriously experiencing wounds |
اوْ مُتَشَحِّطاً بِدَمِهِ | aw mutasha¦¦i§an bidamih¢ | or is totally covered with his blood |
تَحْتَ ٱلسَّنَابِكِ وَٱلارْجُلِ | ta¦ta alssan¡biki wal-arjuli | [struggling] under the toes of the hooves and under feet; |
يَتَمَنَّىٰ شَرْبَةً مِنْ مَاٍء | yatamann¡ sharbatan min m¡’in | he desires a drink of water |
اوْ نَظْرَةً إِلَىٰ اهْلِهِ وَوَلَدِهِ | aw na¨ratan il¡ ahlih¢ wa waladih¢ | or a look at his folk and children |
لاَ يَقْدِرُ عَلَيْهَا | l¡ yaqdiru `alayh¡ | but he cannot get it. |
وَانَا فِي عَافِيَةٍ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | wa an¡ f¢ `¡fiyatin min dh¡lika kullih¢ | While I am safe from all that. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
9 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ | il¡h¢ wa kam min `abdin | My God, many a servant [of You] |
امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ فِي ظُلُمَاتِ ٱلْبِحَارِ | ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a f¢ ¨ulum¡ti albi¦¡ri | is in eves and morns living in the darkness of seas, |
وَعَوَاصِفِ ٱلرِّيَاحِ | wa `aw¡¥ifi alrriy¡¦i | in the storms of winds, |
وَٱلاهْوَاِل وَٱلامْوَاجِ | wal-ahw¡li wal-amw¡ji | and in horrors and billows; |
يَتَوَقَّعُ ٱلْغَرَقَ وَٱلْهَلاَكَ | yatawaqqa`u algharaqa walhal¡ka | anticipating drowning and perdition; |
لاَ يَقْدِر علىٰ حِيلَةٍ | l¡ yaqdiru `al¡ ¦¢latin | he does not have any means in his power; |
اوْ مُبْتَلىٰ بِصَاعِقَةٍ | aw mubtalan bi¥¡`iqatin | or is afflicted with a thunderbolt, |
اوْ هَدْمٍ اوْ حَرْقٍ | aw hadmin aw ¦arqin | demolition, burning, |
اوْ شَرقٍ اوْ خَسْفٍ | aw sharqin aw khasfin | or choking, swallowing of the earth, |
اوْ مَسْخٍ اوْ قَذْفٍ | aw maskhin aw qadhfin | deformation, or striking. |
وَانَا فِي عَافِيَةٍ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | wa an¡ f¢ `¡fiyatin min dh¡lika kullih¢ | While I am safe from all that. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
10 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ | il¡h¢ wa kam min `abdin | My God, many a servant [of You] |
امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ مُسَافِراً | ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a mus¡firan | is in eves and morns on journeys, |
شَاخِصاً عَنْ اهْلِهِ وَوَلَدِهِ | sh¡khi¥an `an ahlih¢ wa waladih¢ | far away from his family members and sons, |
مُتَحَيِّراً فِي ٱلْمَفَاوِزِ | muta¦ayyiran f¢ almaf¡wizi | bewildered in deserts, |
تَائِهاً مَعَ ٱلْوُحُوشِ وَٱلْبَهَائِمِ وَٱلْهَوَامِّ | t¡’ihan ma`a alwu¦£shi walbah¡’imi walhaw¡mmi | wandering with beasts, wild animals, and pests, |
وَحِيداً فَرِيداً | wa¦¢dan far¢dan | alone and forlorn; |
لاَ يَعْرِفُ حِيلَةً | l¡ ya`rifu ¦¢latan | he can find no way out |
وَلاَ يَهْتَدِي سَبِيلاً | wa l¡ yahtad¢ sab¢lan | nor can he follow any right path; |
اوْ مُتَاذِّياً بِبَرْدٍ اوْ حَرٍّ | aw muta’adhdhiyan bibardin aw ¦arrin | or is suffering cold, hot weather, |
اوْ جُوعٍ اوْ عُرْيٍ | aw j£`in aw `uryin | hunger, nudity, |
اوْ غَيْرِهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّدَائِدِ | aw ghayrih¢ mina alshshad¡’idi | or other sorts of tribulations |
مِمَّا انَا مِنْهُ خِلْوٌ | mimm¡ an¡ minhu khilwun | of which I am free; |
فِي عَافِيَةٍ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | f¢ `¡fiyatin min dh¡lika kullih¢ | and I am released from all that. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
11 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَمَوْلايَ وَسَيِّدِي | il¡h¢ wa mawl¡ya wa sayyid¢ | My God, Master, and Lord, |
وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ | wa kam min `abdin | many a servant [of You] |
امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ فَقِيراً عَائِلاً | ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a faq¢ran `¡’ilan | is in eves and morns poor, needy, |
عَارِياً مُمْلِقاً | `¡riyan mumliqan | naked, deprived, |
مُخْفِقاً مَهْجُوراً | mukhfiqan mahj£ran | abortive, abandoned, |
جَائِعاً ظَمْآنَ | j¡’i`an ¨am’¡na | hungry, and thirsty; |
يَنتَظِرُ مَنْ يَعُودُ عَلَيْهِ بِفَضْلٍ | yanta¨iru man ya`£du `alayhi bifa¤lin | expecting someone to bestow a favor upon him; |
اوْ عَبْدٍ وَجِيهٍ عِندَكَ | aw `abdin waj¢hin `indaka | or many a slave—who enjoys a high standing with You |
هُوَ اوْجَهُ مِنِّي عِندَكَ | huwa awjah£ minn¢ `indaka | or who is superior in prominence than I am in Your view |
وَاشَدُّ عِبَادَةً لَكَ | wa ashaddu `ib¡datan laka | and more worshipping for You than I am— |
مَغْلُولاً مَقْهُوراً | maghl£lan maqh£ran | is chained and subdued; |
قَدْ حُمِّلَ ثِقْلاً مِنْ تَعَبِ ٱلْعَنَاءِ | qad ¦ummila thiqlan min ta`abi al`an¡’i | he has been overloaded with the exhaustion of pains, |
وَشِدَّةِ ٱلْعُبُودِيَّةِ | wa shiddati al`ub£diyyati | the hardship of slavery, |
وَكُلْفَةِ ٱلرِّقِّ | wa kulfati alrriqqi | the encumbrance of serfdom, |
وَثِقْلِ ٱلضَّرِيبَةِ | wa thiqli al¤¤ar¢bati | and the burden of imposition; |
اوْ مُبْتَلَىٰ بِبَلاَءٍ شَدِيدٍ | aw mubtalan bibal¡’in shad¢din | or is encountering a hard tribulation |
لاَ قِبَلَ لَهُ بِهِ إِلاَّ بِمَنِّكَ عَلَيْهِ | l¡ qibala lah£ bih¢ ill¡ bimannika `alayhi | that he cannot stand except by a favor that You bestow upon him; |
وَانَا ٱلْمَخْدُومُ ٱلْمُنَعَّمُ | wa an¡ almakhd£mu almuna“mu | while I am served, turning in bliss, |
ٱلْمُعَافَىٰ ٱلْمُكَرَّمُ | almu`¡f¡ almukarramu | relieved from that, honored, |
فِي عَافِيَةٍ مِمَّا هُوَ فِيهِ | f¢ `¡fiyatin mimm¡ huwa f¢hi | and released from what that one suffers. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ عَلَىٰ ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | falaka al¦amdu `al¡ dh¡lika kullih¢ | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
12 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَسَيِّدِي | il¡h¢ wa sayyid¢ | My God and Master, |
وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ | wa kam min `abdin ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a | many a servant [of You] is in eves and morns |
شَرِيداً طَرِيداً | shar¢dan §ar¢dan | homeless, fugitive, |
حَيْرَانَ مُتَحَيِّراً | ¦ayr¡na muta¦ayyiran | confused, bewildered, |
جَائِعاً خَائِفاً | j¡’i`an kh¡’ifan | hungry, and afraid |
فِي ٱلصَّحَارِي وَٱلْبَرَارِي | f¢ all¥¥a¦¡r¢ walbar¡r¢ | in deserts and wild lands; |
قَدْ احْرَقَهُ ٱلْحَرُّ وَٱلْبَرْدُ | qad a¦raqah£ al¦arru walbardu | he is burnt by hot and cold weather |
وَهُوَ فِي ضُرٍّ مِنَ ٱلعَيْشِ | wa huwa f¢ ¤urrin mina al`ayshi | while he is suffering harsh living, |
وَضَنكٍ مِنَ ٱلحَيَاةِ | wa ¤anakin mina al¦ay¡ti | barely sufficient manner of living, |
وَذُلٍّ مِنَ ٱلمَقَامِ | wa dhullin mina almaq¡mi | and humble position; |
يَنظُرُ إِلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ حَسْرَةً | yan¨uru il¡ nafsih¢ ¦asratan | he looks at himself with grief |
لاَ يَقْدِرُ لَهَا عَلَىٰ ضُرٍّ وَلاَ نَفْعٍ | l¡ yaqdiru lah¡ `al¡ ¤urrin wa l¡ naf`in | because he cannot make any harm or benefit to himself; |
وَانَا خِلْوٌ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | wa an¡ khilwun min dh¡lika kullih¢ | but I am free from all that |
بِجُودِكَ وَكَرَمِكَ | bij£dika wa karamika | on account of Your magnanimity and generosity. |
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ | falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi | So, all praise be to You, O Lord; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces; |
وَٱرْحَمْنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ | war¦amn¢ bira¦matika | and have mercy upon me, by Your mercy; |
يَا ارْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ | y¡ ar¦ama alrr¡¦im¢na | O most Merciful of all those who show mercy. |
13 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَسَيِّدِي | il¡h¢ wa sayyid¢ | My God and Master, |
وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ | wa kam min `abdin ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a | many a servant [of You] is in eves and morns |
عَلِيلاً مَرِيضاً | `al¢lan mar¢¤an | ailing, ill, |
سَقِيماً مُدْنِفاً | saq¢man mudnifan | sick, and seriously unwell; |
عَلَىٰ فُرُشِ ٱلْعِلَّةِ وَفِي لِبَاسِهَا | `al¡ furushi al`illati wa f¢ lib¡sih¡ | [laid] on the bed of ailment and dressed with it; |
يَتَقَلَّبُ يَمِيناً وَشِمَالاً | yataqallabu yam¢nan wa shim¡lan | he turns right and left [unrestfully] |
لاَ يَعْرِفُ شَيْئاً مِنْ لَذَّةِ ٱلطَّعَامِ | l¡ ya`rifu shay’an min ladhdhati al§§a`¡mi | and cannot find the good taste of food |
وَلاَ مِنْ لَذَّةِ ٱلشَّرَابِ | wa l¡ min ladhdhati alshshar¡bi | or the good taste of drink; |
يَنظُرُ إِلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ حَسْرَةً | yan¨uru il¡ nafsih¢ ¦asratan | he looks at himself with grief |
لاَ يَسْتَطِيعُ لَهَا ضَرّاً وَلاَ نَفْعاً | l¡ yasta§¢`u lah¡ ¤arran wa l¡ naf`an | because he cannot make any harm or benefit to himself. |
وَانَا خِلْوٌ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | wa an¡ khilwun min dh¡lika kullih¢ | While I am free from all that |
بِجُودِكَ وَكَرَمِكَ | bij£dika wa karamika | on account of Your magnanimity and generosity. |
فَلاَ إلٰهَ إِلاَّ انْتَ سُبْحانَكَ | fal¡ il¡ha ill¡ anta sub¦¡naka | So, there is no god save You. All glory be to You; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لَكَ مِنَ ٱلعَابِدِينَ | waj`aln¢ laka mina al`¡bid¢na | and include me with the worshippers of You, |
وَلِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | wa lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | those who are thankful for Your bounties, |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces; |
وَٱرْحَمْنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ | war¦amn¢ bira¦matika | and have mercy upon me, by Your mercy; |
يَا ارْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ | y¡ ar¦ama alrr¡¦im¢na | O most Merciful of all those who show mercy. |
14 | ||
مَوْلايَ وَسَيِّدِي | mawl¡ya wa sayyid¢ | My Lord and Master, |
وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ | wa kam min `abdin ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a | many a servant [of You] is in eves and morns |
وَقَدْ دَنَا يَوْمُهُ مِنْ حَتْفِهِ | wa qad dan¡ yawmuh£ min ¦atfih¢ | receiving the day of his death; |
وَاحَدْقَ بِهِ مَلَكُ ٱلْمَوْتِ فِي اعْوَانِهِ | wa a¦daqa bih¢ malaku almawti f¢ a`w¡nih¢ | and the Angel of Death and his assistants are gazing at him; |
يُعَالِجُ سَكَرَاتِ ٱلْمَوْتِ وَحِيَاضَهُ | yu`¡liju sakar¡ti almawti wa ¦iy¡¤ah£ | he is thus suffering the agonies and pains of death. |
تَدُورُ عَيْنَاهُ يَمِيناً وَشِمَالاً | tad£ru `ayn¡hu yam¢nan wa shim¡lan | His eyes are turning right and left, |
يَنظُرُ إِلَىٰ احِبَّائِهِ وَاوِدَّائِهِ وَاخِلاَّئِهِ | yan¨uru il¡ a¦ibb¡’ih¢ wa awidd¡’ih¢ wa akhill¡’ih¢ | looking at his dear, beloved, and intimate friends; |
قَدْ مُنِعَ مِنَ ٱلكَلاَمِ | qad muni`a mina alkal¡mi | he is restrained from ability to talk |
وَحُجِبَ عَنْ ٱلْخِطَابِ | wa ¦ujiba `ani alkhi§¡bi | and withheld from speaking. |
يَنظُرُ إِلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ حَسْرَةً | yan¨uru il¡ nafsih¢ ¦asratan | He looks at himself with grief |
لاَ يَسْتَطِيعُ لَهَا ضَرّاً وَلاَ نَفْعاً | l¡ yasta§¢`u lah¡ ¤arran wa l¡ naf`an | because he cannot make any harm or benefit to himself; |
وَانَا خِلْوٌ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | wa an¡ khilwun min dh¡lika kullih¢ | but I am free from all that |

يَا ارْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ | y¡ ar¦ama alrr¡¦im¢na | O most Merciful of all those who show mercy! |
15 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَمَوْلايَ وَسَيِّدِي | il¡h¢ wa mawl¡ya wa sayyid¢ | My God, Lord, and Master, |
وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ | wa kam min `abdin ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a | many a servant [of You] is in eves and morns |
فِي مَضَائِقِ ٱلْحُبُوسِ وَٱلسُّجُونِ | f¢ ma¤¡’iqi al¦ub£si walssuj£ni | in the straits of jails and prisons |
وَكُرَبِهَا وَذُلهِّا وَحَدِيدِهَا | wa kurabih¡ wa dhullih¡ wa ¦ad¢dih¡ | and in their agonies, humiliation, and iron; |
يَتَدَاوَلُهُ اعْوَانُهَا وَزَبَانِيَتُهَا | yatad¡waluh£ a`w¡nuh¡ wa zab¡niyatuh¡ | controlled by their keepers and guards; |
فَلاَ يَدْرِي ايُّ حَالٍ يُفْعَلُ بِهِ | fal¡ yadr¢ ayyu ¦¡lin yuf`alu bih¢ | so, he has no idea what will be done to him |
وَايُّ مُثْلَةٍ يُمَثَّلُ بِهِ | wa ayyu muthlatin yumaththalu bih¢ | and which punishment will be set upon him. |
فَهُوَ فِي ضُرٍّ مِنَ ٱلعَيْشِ | fa huwa f¢ ¤urrin mina al`ayshi | He is suffering harsh living |
وَضَنكٍ مِنَ ٱلحَيَاةِ | wa ¤ankin mina al¦ayati | and barely sufficient manner of living. |
يَنظُرُ إِلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ حَسْرَةً | yan¨uru il¡ nafsih¢ ¦asratan | He looks at himself with grief |

وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces; |
وَٱرْحَمْنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ | war¦amn¢ bira¦matika | and have mercy upon me, by Your mercy, |
يَا ارْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ | y¡ ar¦ama alrr¡¦im¢na | O most Merciful of all those who show mercy. |
16 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَمَوْلايَ وَسَيِّدِي | il¡h¢ wa mawl¡ya wa sayyid¢ | My God, Lord, and Master, |
وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ | wa kam min `abdin ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a | many a servant [of You] is in eves and morns |
قَدِ ٱسْتَمَرَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلْقَضَاءُ | qad istamarra `alayhi alqa¤¡’u | permanently suffering under the vicissitudes of time, |
وَاحْدَقَ بِهِ ٱلْبَلاءُ | wa a¦daqa bih¢ albal¡’u | surrounded by hardships, |
وَفَارَقَ اوِدَّاءَهُ وَاحِبَّاءَهُ وَاخِلاَّءَهُ | wa f¡raqa awidd¡’ah£ wa a¦ibb¡’ah£ wa akhill¡’ah£ | departing his dear, beloved, and intimate friends, |
وَامْسَىٰ اسِيراً حَقِيراً ذَليِلاً | wa ams¡ as¢ran ¦aq¢ran dhal¢lan | receiving the evenings while he is imprisoned, humiliated, and lowly, |
فِي ايدِي ٱلْكُفَّارِ وَٱلاعْدَاءِ | f¢ ayd¢ alkuff¡ri wal-a`d¡’i | in the hands of the unbelievers and the enemies |
يَتَدَاوَلُونَهُ يَمِيناً وَشِمَالاً | yatad¡wal£nah£ yam¢nan wa shim¡lan | who dominate him from the right and the left; |
قَدْ حُصِرَ فِي ٱلْمَطَامِيرِ | qad ¦u¥ira f¢ alma§¡m¢ri | he has been locked up in cellars |
وَثُقِّلَ بِٱلْحَدِيدِ | wa thuqqila bil¦ad¢di | and overloaded with iron (shackles); |
لاَ يَرَىٰ شَيْئاً مِنْ ضِيَاءِ ٱلدُّنيَا | l¡ yar¡ shay’an min ¤iy¡’i aldduny¡ | he cannot see any of the light of the world |
وَلاَ مِنْ رَوْحِهَا | wa l¡ min raw¦ih¡ | nor any of its rest; |
يَنظُرُ إِلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ حَسْرَةً | yan¨uru il¡ nafsih¢ ¦asratan | he looks at himself with grief |
لاَ يَسْتَطِيعُ لَهَا ضَرّاًوَ لاَ نَفْعاً | l¡ yasta§¢`u lah¡ ¤arran wa l¡ naf`an | because he cannot make any harm or benefit to himself; |
وَانَا خِلْوٌ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | wa an¡ khilwun min dh¡lika kullih¢ | but I am free from all that |
بِجُودِكَ وَكَرَمِكَ | bij£dika wa karmika | on account of Your magnanimity and generosity. |

وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces; |
وَٱرْحَمْنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ | war¦amn¢ bira¦matika | and have mercy upon me, by Your mercy, |
يَا ارْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ | y¡ ar¦ama alrr¡¦im¢na | O most Merciful of all those who show mercy. |
17 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَمَوْلايَ وَسَيِّدِي | il¡h¢ wa mawl¡ya wa sayyid¢ | My God, Lord, and Master; |
وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ | wa kam min `abdin ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a | many a servant [of You] in eves and morns |
وَقَدِ ٱشْتَاقَ إِلَىٰ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِٱلرَّغْبَةِ فِيهَا | wa qad isht¡qa il¡ aldduny¡ bilrraghbati f¢h¡ | has desirously longed for the worldly pleasures |
إِلَىٰ انْ خَاطَرَ بِنَفْسِهِ وَمَاِلهِ | il¡ an kh¡§ara binafsih¢ wa m¡lih¢ | that he risked himself and his property |
حِرْصاً مِنْهُ عَلَيْهَا | ¦ir¥an minhu `alayh¡ | out of his greediness of them (i.e. these pleasures). |
قَدْ رَكِبَ ٱلْفُلْكَ وَكُسِرَتْ بِهِ | qad rakiba alfulka wa kusirat bih¢ | He thus embarked on a ship, which was then broken; |
وَهُوَ فِي آفَاقِ ٱلْبِحَارِ وَظُلَمِهَا | wa huwa f¢ ¡f¡qi albi¦¡ri wa ¨ulamih¡ | so, he is in the horizons and murk of oceans; |
يَنظُرُ إِلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ حَسْرَةً | yan¨uru il¡ nafsif¢ ¦asratan | he looks at himself with grief |
لاَ يَقْدِرُ لَهَا عَلَىٰ ضَرٍّ وَلاَ نَفْعٍ | l¡ yaqdiru lah¡ `al¡ ¤urrin wa l¡ naf`in | because he cannot make any harm or benefit to himself; |
وَانَا خِلْوٌ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | wa an¡ khilwun min dh¡lika kullih¢ | but I am free from all that |
بِجُودِكَ وَكَرَمِكَ | bij£dika wa karamika | on account of Your magnanimity and generosity. |

صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لَكَ مِنَ ٱلعَابِدِينَ | waj`aln¢ laka mina al`¡bid¢na | and include me with the worshippers of You, |
وَلِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | wa lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | those who are thankful for Your bounties, |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces; |
وَٱرْحَمْنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ | war¦amn¢ bira¦matika | and have mercy upon me, by Your mercy, |
يَا ارْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ | y¡ ar¦ama alrr¡¦im¢na | O most Merciful of all those who show mercy. |
18 | ||
إِلٰهِي وَمَوْلايَ وسَيِّدِي | il¡h¢ wa mawl¡ya wa sayyid¢ | My God, Lord, and Master, |
وَكَمْ مِنْ عَبْدٍ امْسَىٰ وَاصْبَحَ | wa kam min `abdin ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a | many a servant [of You] is in eves and morns |
قَدِ ٱسْتَمَرَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلْقَضَاءُ | qad istamarra `alayhi alqa¤¡’u | permanently suffering under the vicissitudes of time |
وَاحْدَقَ بِهِ ٱلْبَلاَءُ | wa a¦daqa bih¢ albal¡’u | and is surrounded by hardships, |
وَٱلْكُفَّارُ وَٱلاعْدَاءُ | walkuff¡ru wal-a`d¡’u | unbelievers, and enemies; |
وَاخَذَتْهُ ٱلرِّمَاحُ وَٱلسُّيُوفُ وَٱلسِّهَامُ | wa akhadhat-hu alrrim¡¦u walssuy£fu walssih¡mu | and is taken up by spears, swords, and arrows; |
وَجُدِّلَ صَرِيعاً | wa juddila ¥ar¢`an | and he was then knocked down and thrown to the ground. |
وَقَدْ شَرِبَتِ ٱلارْضُ مِنْ دَمِهِ | wa qad sharibat al-ar¤u min damih¢ | The soil swallowed his blood |
وَاكَلَتِ ٱلسِّبَاعُ وَٱلطَّيْرُ مِنْ لَحْمِهِ | wa akalat alssib¡`u wal§§ayru min la¦mih¢ | and beasts and birds munched his flesh. |
وَانَا خِلْوٌ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ | wa an¡ khilwun min dh¡lika kullih¢ | But I am free from all that |
بِجُودِكَ وَكَرَمِكَ | bij£dika wa karamika | on account of Your magnanimity and generosity |
لاَ بِٱسْتِحْقَاقٍ منِي | l¡ bisti¦q¡qin minn¢ | although I do not deserve it. |
يَا لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ انْتَ سُبْحانَكَ | y¡ il¡ha ill¡ anta sub¦¡naka | O He save Whom there is no god. All glory be to You; |
مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لاَ يُغْلَبُ | min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu | You are invulnerably Omnipotent |
وَذِي انَاةٍ لاَ يَعْجَلُ | wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu | and prudently Forbearing. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces; |
وَٱرْحَمْنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ | war¦amn¢ bira¦matika | and have mercy upon me, by Your mercy, |
يَا ارْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ | y¡ ar¦ama alrr¡¦im¢na | O most Merciful of all those who show mercy; |
وَعِزَّتِكَ يَا كَرِيمُ | wa `izzatika y¡ kar¢mu | and by Your might; O All-generous. |
19 | ||
َلاطْلُبَنَّ مِمَّا لَديْكَ | la’a§lubanna mimm¡ ladayka | I will insistently ask for that which is with You, |
وََلالِحَّنَّ عَلَيْكَ | wa la’uli¦¦anna `alayka | persist on You, |
وََلامُدَّنَّ يَدِيَ نَحْوَكَ | wa la’amuddanna yad¢ na¦waka | and extend my hand towards You, |
مَعَ جُرْمِهَا إِلَيْكَ | ma`a jurmih¡ ilayka | although it has committed offenses against You. |
يَا رَبِّ فَبِمَنْ اعُوذُ | y¡ rabbi fabiman a`£dhu | O my Lord, whose protection should I seek |
وَبِمَنْ الُوذُ | wa biman al£dhu | and whose refuge should I take? |
لاَ احَدَ لِي إِلاَّ انتَ | l¡ a¦ada l¢ ill¡ anta | None can stand for me save You. |
افَتَرُدَّنِي وَانتَ مُعَوَّلِي | Afataruddan¢ wa anta mu`awwal¢ | Will You reject me while You are my one and only confidence |
وَعَلَيْكَ مُتَّكَلِي | wa `alayka muttakal¢ | and upon You alone do I rely? |
اسْالُكَ بِٱسْمِكَ ٱلَّذِي وَضَعْتَهُ عَلىٰ ٱلسَّمَاءِ فَٱسْتَقَلَّتْ | as’aluka bismika alladh¢ wa¤a`tah£ `al¡ alssam¡’i fastaqallat | I thus beseech You in the name of Your Name that when You put it on the heavens, they raised, |
وَعَلَىٰ ٱلارْضِ فَٱسْتَقَرَّتْ | wa `al¡ al-ar¤i fastaqarrat | when You put it on the earth, it settled down, |
وَعَلَىٰ ٱلْجِبَاِل فَرَسَتْ | wa `al¡ aljib¡li farasat | when You put it on the mountains, they became firm, |
وَعَلَىٰ ٱللَّيْلِ فَاظْلَمَ | wa `al¡ allayli fa-a¨lama | when You put it on the night, it darkled, |
وَعَلَىٰ ٱلنَّهَارِ فَٱسْتَنَارَ | wa `al¡ alnnah¡ri fastan¡ra | and when You put it on the daylight, it lit up, |
ان تُصَلِّيَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | an tu¥alliya `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | [I beseech You] to bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, |
وَان تَقْضِيَ لِي حَوَائِجِي كُلَّهَا | wa an taq¤iya l¢ ¦aw¡’ij¢ kullah¡ | satisfy all my wants, |
وَتَغْفِرَ لِي ذُنُوبِي كُلَّهَا | wa taghfira l¢ dhun£b¢ kullah¡ | forgive all my sins, |
صَغِيرَهَا وَكَبِيرَهَا | ¥agh¢rah¡ wa kab¢rah¡ | the trivial and the significant, |
وَتُوَسِّعَ عَلَيَّ مِنَ ٱلرِّزْقِ | wa tuwassi`a `alayya mina alrrizqi | and expand my sustenance |
مَا تُبَلِّغُنِي بِهِ شَرَفَ ٱلدُّنيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ | m¡ tuballighun¢ bih¢ sharafa aldduny¡ wal-¡khirati | to the scope that I can attain the honor of this world and the Hereafter. |
يَا ارْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ | y¡ ar¦ama alrr¡¦im¢na | O most Merciful of all those who show mercy! |
20 | ||
مَوْلايَ بِكَ ٱسْتَعَنتُ | mawl¡ya bika ista`antu | My Master, Your help do I seek; |
فَصَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَاعنِي | fa¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin wa a`inn¢ | so, bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad and help me! |
وَبِكَ ٱسْتَجَرْتُ فَاجِرْنِي | wa bika istajartu fa-ajirn¢ | Your protection do I seek; so, (please) protect me. |
وَاغْننِي بِطَاعَتِكَ عَنْ طَاعَةِ عِبَادِكَ | wa ighnin¢ bi§¡`atika `an §¡`ati `ib¡dika | Through my obedience to You, (please) suffice me from obedience to Your servants. |
وَبِمَسْالَتِكَ عَنْ مَسْالَةِ خَلْقِكَ | wa bimas’alatika `an mas’alati khalqika | Through my entreaty to You; (please) suffice me from beseeching Your creatures. |
وَٱنقُلْنِي مِنْ ذُلِّ ٱلْفَقْرِ إِلَىٰ عِزِّ ٱلْغِنَىٰ | wanquln¢ min dhulli alfaqri il¡ `izzi alghin¡ | Transfer me from the humiliation of poverty to the honor of richness |
وَمِن ذُلِّ ٱلْمَعَاصِي إِلَىٰ عِزِّ ٱلطَّاعَةِ | wa min dhulli alma`¡¥¢ il¡ `izzi al§§¡`ati | and from the humiliation of acts of disobedience to You to the honor of obedience to You. |
فَقَدْ فَضَّلْتَنِي عَلَىٰ كَثِيرٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ | faqad fa¤¤altan¢ `al¡ kath¢rin min khalqika | You have really given me preference over many of Your creatures |
جُوداً مِنكَ وَكَرَماً | j£dan minka wa karaman | out of Your magnanimity and generosity, |
لاَ بِٱسْتِحْقَاقٍ منِي | l¡ bisti¦q¡qin minn¢ | although I do not deserve it. |
إِلٰهِي فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ عَلَىٰ ذَلَك كُلِّهِ | il¡h¢ falaka al¦amdu `al¡ dh¡lika kullih¢ | My God, all praise be to You for all that. |
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ | ¥alli `al¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li Muhammadin | (Please) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad |
وَٱجْعَلْنِي لِنَعْمَائِكَ مِنَ ٱلشَّاكِرِينَ | waj`aln¢ lina`m¡’ika mina alshsh¡kir¢na | and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties |
وَلآِلاَئِكَ مِنَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ | wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na | and those who permanently mention Your graces. |
You should then prostrate yourself and say the following:
سَجَدَ وَجْهِي الذَّلِيلُ` | sajada wajhiya aldhdhal¢lu | My lowly face is humbly prostrating |
لِوَجْهِكَ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْجَلِيلِ | liwajhika al`az¢zi aljal¢li | before Your All-majestic and Almighty Face. |
سَجَدَ وَجْهِيَ ٱلْبَاِلي ٱلْفَانِي | sajada wajhiya alb¡l¢ alf¡n¢ | My rotten, mortal face is prostrating |
لِوَجْهِكَ ٱلدَّائِمِ ٱلْبَاقِي | liwajhika aldd¡’imi alb¡q¢ | before Your Everlasting, Eternal Face. |
سَجَدَ وَجْهِيَ ٱلْفَقِيرُ | sajada wajhiya alfaq¢ru | My poor face is prostrating |
لِوَجْهِكَ ٱلْغَنِيِّ ٱلْكَبِيرِ | liwajhika alghaniyyi alkab¢ri | before Your All-dependent and All-great Face. |
سَجَدَ وَجْهِي وَسَمْعِي وَبَصَرِي | sajada wajh¢ wa sam`¢ wa ba¥ar¢ | Prostrating are my face, my hearing, my sight, |
وَلَحْمِي وَدَمِي وَجِلْدِي | wa la¦m¢ wa dam¢ wa jild¢ | my flesh, my blood, my skin, |
وَعَظْمِي وَمَا اقَلَّتِ ٱلارْضُ منِي | wa `a¨m¢ wa m¡ aqallat al-ar¤u minn¢ | my bones, and whatever part of me that is carried by the earth |
لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ | lill¡hi rabbi al`¡lam¢na | before Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. |
اللَّهُمَّ عُدْ عَلَىٰ جَهْلِي بِحِلْمِكَ | all¡humma `ud `al¡ jahl¢ bi¦ilmika | O Allah, return upon my ignorance with Your indulgence, |
وَعَلَىٰ فَقْرِي بِغِنَاكَ | wa `al¡ faqr¢ bighin¡ka | upon my neediness with Your self-sufficiency, |
وَعَلَىٰ ذُلِّي بِعِزِّكَ وَسُلْطَانِكَ | wa `al¡ dhull¢ bi`izzika wa sul§¡nika | upon my humiliation with Your Almightiness and Authority, |
وَعَلَىٰ ضَعْفِي بِقُوَّتِكَ | wa `al¡ ¤a`f¢ biquwwatika | upon my powerlessness with Your omnipotence, |
وَعَلَىٰ خَوْفِي بِامْنِكَ | wa `al¡ khawf¢ bi-amnika | upon my fearfulness with Your security, |
وَعَلَىٰ ذُنُوبِي وَخَطَايَايَ بِعَفْوِكَ وَرَحْمَتِكَ | wa `al¡ dhun£b¢ wa kha§¡y¡ya bi`afwika wa ra¦matika | and upon my sins and offenses with Your pardon and mercy. |
يَا رَحْمٰنُ يَا رَحِيمُ | y¡ ra¦m¡nu y¡ ra¦¢mu | O All-beneficent! O All-merciful! |
اللَّهُمَّ إنِي ادْرَا بِكَ فِي نَحْرِ… | all¡humma inn¢ adra’u bika f¢ na¦ri… | O Allah, I seek You to protect me against… |
Now, you may mention the name of your enemy.
وَاعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهِ | wa a`£dhu bika min sharrih¢ | I seek Your protection against his evils; |
فَٱكْفنِيهِ بِمَا كَفَيْتَ بِهِ انْبِيَاءَكَ | fakfin¢hi bim¡ kafayta bih¢ anbiy¡’aka | so, (please) save me from him just as You have saved Your Prophets, |
وَاوْلِيَاءَكَ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ | wa awliy¡’aka min khalqika | Your intimate servants among Your creatures, |
وَصَاِلحِ عِبَادِكَ | wa ¥¡li¦¢ `ib¡dika | and Your righteous servants |
مِن فَرَاعِنَةِ خَلْقِكَ | min far¡`inati khalqika | against the tyrants amongst Your creatures, |
وَطُغَاةِ عُدَاتِكَ | wa §ughati `ud¡tika | and the oppressors amongst Your enemies |
وَشَرِّ جَمِيعِ خَلْقِكَ | wa sharri jam¢`i khalqika | and against the evil of all Your creatures. |
بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا ارْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ | bira¦matika y¡ ar¦ama alrr¡¦im¢na | [I ask You] in the name of Your mercy; O most Merciful of all those who show mercy! |
إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ | innaka `al¡ kulli shay’in qad¢run | Verily, You have power over all things. |
وَحَسْبُنَا ٱللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ ٱلْوَكِيلُ | wa ¦asbun¡ all¡hu wa ni`ma alwak¢lu | Sufficient unto us is Allah; He is the best protector. |
