19th and 21st Ramadan Amaal – Specific Amaal / Duas

The night of 19th and 21st Ramadan Amaal. marked the beginning of one of the greatest losses to humanity. A man who had given everything to others, who had been oppressed but never thought of revenge, who forgave his enemies, who helped the weak and fathered the orphans was preparing to meet his Lord. On this night, a wicked and impure man was going to besmear his hands with the blood of the Commander of the Faithful so that it might serve as a dowry for a wicked and impure woman.

When it was dawn, Imam Ali (AS) proceeded to the mosque slowly. He stopped at the gate for a short while and looked at the mourning ducks. Imam arrived at the Kufa mosque and prostrated himself before Almighty Allah . At that time, ibne Muljim (May the curse of Allah and all his creatures befall him) dealt such a blow on his head, everything in this world became heartbroken except the face of Ali who cried out: “By the Lord of the Kabah, I have been successful!”

On the twenty-first day of Ramadhan, AH 40, Imam `Ali ibn Abi-Talib, Amir al-Mu’minin peace be upon him, departed from this life as a martyr.

Al-Kaf`amiy has quoted Sayyid Ibn Baqi as saying that it is recommended to say the following supplication at the twenty-first night of Ramadhan:

English Transliteration Arabic
O Allah: (please) bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, allahumma salli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

And guidance that You confer upon me against any item of straying off, wa hudan tamunn bihi `alayya min kulli dhalalatin
And affluence that blocks the door to all poverty against me, wa ghinan tasudd bihi `anni baba kull faqrin

This very hour, this very hour, this very hour, O the All-generous, alssa`ata alssa`ata alssa`ata ya karimu
And apprehension due to which You spread over me all items of mercy, wa khawfan tanshuru li bihi kull rahmatin
And shelter due to which You intervene between my sins and me, wa `ismatan tahulu biha bayny wa bina aldhdhunubi
So that I shall succeed in the view of the Infallible ones with You, hatta a’ufliha biha `inda alma`sumina `indaka
Out of Your mercy, O the most Merciful of all those who show mercy. birahmatika yarhama alrrahimina

It has been narrated that `Ali ibn Hammad visited Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq (a.s) at the twenty-first night of Ramadhan. “Have you bathed yourself, Hammad?” asked the Imam. “Yes, I have,” answered Hammad. The Imam (a.s) then asked him to stand by him so as to imitate him in offering the prayers.

Hammad did. When they finished all the prayers, the Imam (a.s) began to say the supplications and Hammad listened and prayed for response. When dawn rose, the Imam (a.s) declared the adhan (call to prayer), uttered the iqamah (the prefatory part of prayers), and then summoned some of his servant to participate in the prayer.

They all stood behind the Imam (a.s) who led their congregational Fajr Prayer reciting Surahs of al-Fatihah and al-Qadr in the first Rak`ah and Surahs of al-Fatihah and al-Tawhid in the second.

When he finished the post-prayer invocations of glorifying Almighty Allah, praising Him, venerating Him, thanking Him, praying Him for sending blessings upon the Holy Prophet and his Household, and praying Him for the good of all the believing men and women as well as all the Muslims, Imam al-Sadiq (a.s) prostrated himself.

The companions could not hear anything except the Imam’s breaths for a long time. Hammad narrated: I could then hear him saying the following supplication, as quoted from Iqbal al-A`mal 1:336:

And respond to my prayer; O the most Merciful of all those who show mercy. wa istajib ly du`aiy ya arhama alrrahimina.

This supplication has been mentioned by Sayyid Ibn Tawus in his book of ‘Iqbal al-A`mal’.

Being the best time of I`tikaf (the ritual seclusion in places of worship for practicing acts of worship), it is highly recommended to practice the ritual I`tikaf at the last ten nights of Ramadhan, for this deed brings about an abundant reward.

According to narrations, its reward is as same as the reward of two times of Hajj and two times of `Umrah. In this regard, it has been that the Holy Prophet (a.s), at the last ten nights of Ramadhan, used to confine himself to the mosque where a dome made of camel hair would be erected from him while he would roll up his apron and his bed.

Shaykh al-Mufid says: At this night, it is highly recommended, as frequently as possible, to pray Almighty Allah for sending blessings upon the Holy Prophet and his Household, to curse those who have wronged the Family of the Holy Prophet, and to curse the killer of Imam `Ali Amir al-Mu’minin.

Day of 21st of Ramadan

This is the day on which Imam `Ali Amir al-Mu’minin (a.s) departed life as martyr. It is thus appropriate to visit his holy tomb. In the book of ‘Hadiyyat al-Za’ir’, it is referred to the words said by al-Khadhir on this day. These words can be considered a form of Ziarat /visiting Imam `Ali (a.s) on this day.

These words, quoted from al-Kafi 1:454, are as follows

English Transliteration Arabic

And you were the closest of them to Allah’s Messenger—peace be upon him and his Household, wa aqrabahum min rasulil-lahi sallal-lahu ‘alayhi wa alih

You became stronger when his companions became weak, qawita hina dha’ufa ashabuh
And you advanced when they surrendered, wa barazta hinas-takanu

And you abode by the course of Allah’s Messenger—peace be upon him and his Household—as they were his companions, wa lazamta minhaja rasulil-lahi sallal-lahu ‘alayhi wa alihi idh hum ashabuh
And you were truly his vicegerent. wa kunta khalifatahu haqqa
No one could ever compete with you or vie with you in this position lam tunaza’ wa lam tudhra’
In spite of the existence of hypocrites and the despise of the unbelievers, birughmil-munafiqina wa ghay¨il-kafirin
And the malice of the enviers and the disgrace of the wicked ones. wa kurhil-hasidina wa sigharil-fasiqin
You thus managed the matters when they failed to do so faqumta bil-amri hin fashilu
And you spoke (the truth) when they stammered, wa nathaqta hina tata’ta’u
And you carried on with the light of Allah when they stopped. wamadhayta binuril-lahi idh waqafu
As they followed you, they were guided (to the true path), fattaba’uka fahudu
You voice was the lowest (out of politeness) and was the highest in supplication, wakunta akhfadhahum sawtan wa a’lahum qunuta

By Allah (I swear), you were the true leader of the religion first and last: kunta wallahi ya’suban liddini awwalan wa akhira
You were thus the first (of the enduring ones) when the other people departed, and you were the last (in steadfastness) when they failed. al-awwala hina tafarraqan-nasu wal-akhiru hin fashilu
For the believers, you were merciful father, as they were your dependants; kunta lil-mu`minina aban rahiman idh saru ‘alayka ‘iyala
So, you carried the burdens that they were too weak to carry, fahamalta athqala ma ‘anhu dha’ufu
And you preserved that which they forfeited, and you conserved that which they neglected, wa hafi¨ta ma adha’u wa ra’ayta ma ahmalu
And you prepared yourself for facing those who allied (against Islam) and you advanced when they were dismayed, wa shammarta idhij-tama’u wa ‘alawta idh hala’u
And you resisted when they hurried (in absconding) and you achieved the goals for which they fought, wa sabarta idh asra’u wa adrakta awtara ma thalabu
And they tasted at your hands that which they had not expected. wa nalu bika ma lam tahtasibu
You were thus incessant and relentless torment on the unbelievers kunta ‘alal-kuffari ‘adhaban sabban wa nahba
And you were support and shelter for the believers. wa lil-mu`minina ‘amadan wa hisna
Thus, I swear by Allah that you won its bliss and gained its reward, futhirta wallahi bina’ma`iha wafuzta bihaba`iha
And you attained its merits and prevailed on its worth. wa ahrazta sawabighaha wa dhahabta bifadha`iliha
Your argument was never weak and your heart never deviated, lan taflul hujjatuka walam yazigh qalbuk
And your sagacity was never feeble, and your determination never cowered, and you never betrayed. walam tadh-‘uf basiratuka walam tajbun nafsuka walam takhun
You were as firm as mountain, as storms could never displace you, kunta kal-jabali la tuharrikuhul-‘awasif
And you were as exactly as what was said about you: People felt secure under your government and in what was entrusted with you. wakunta kama qala aminan-nasu fi suhbatika wadhati yadik
You were also as exactly as what was said about you: modest in your body and strong in carrying out the orders of Allah, wakunta kama qala dha’ifan fi badanika qawiyyan fi amrillah
Humble in yourself and enjoying a great standing with Allah, mutawadhi’an fi nafsika ‘a¨iman ‘indallah
Great in the earth and lofty in the view of the believers. kabiran fil-ardhi jalilan ‘indal-mu`minin
None could ever find fault with you, and none could ever speak evil of you, lam yakun li-ahadin fika mahmazun wala liqa`ilin fika maghmaz
And you never desired for anyone, And you were never lenient (unfairly) to anyone. wala li-ahadin fika mathma’un wala li-ahadin ‘indaka hawadah
The weak, humble one was strong and mighty in your view until you give him back his right, adh-dha’ifudh-dhalilu ‘indaka qawiyyun ‘azizun hatta ta`khudha lahu bihaqqih
And the strong, mighty one was weak in your view until you take the others’ rights from him. wal-qawiyyul-‘azizu ‘indaka dha’ifun dhalilun hata ta`khudha minhul-haqq
The near and the remote were equal in your view. wal-qaribu wal-ba’idu ‘indaka fi dhalika sawa`
Your habit was to be right, honest, and kind, sha`nukal-haqqu was-sidqu war-rifq
And your words were ruling and determination, waqawluka hukmun wa hatm
And your custom was forbearance and fortitude, wa amruka hilmin wa hazm
And your view was knowledge and firmness in whatever you did. wa ra`yuka ‘ilmun wa ‘azmun fi ma fa’alt
Through you, the right path was taken and the difficult was made easy, waqad nuhija bikas-sabilu wa sahhala bikal-‘asir
Fires were also extinguished by you and the religion became even at your hands, and Islam and the believers because mighty because of you, wa uthfi`atin-niran wa’tudila bikad-dinu waqawiya bikal-islamu wal-mu`minun
You thus advanced in great strides and stopped and curbed the wrongdoings of those who came after you. wasabaqta sabqan ba’idan wa at-‘abta man ba’daka ta’aban shadida
You are thus too lofty to be mourned and the calamity (of losing you) was so astounding for the inhabitants of the heavens, fajalalta ‘anil-buka`i wa ‘a¨umat raziyyatuka fis-sama` فَجَلَلْتَ عَنِ الْبُكَاءِ وَعَظُمَتْ رَزِيَّتُكَ فِي السَّمَاءِ
And this calamity undermined all people. wa haddat musibatukal-anam
Surely, we are Allah’s and to Him we shall surely return. fa-inna lillahi wa-inna ilayhi raji’un
We succumb to Allah’s acts and to His matters do we submit. radhina ‘anillahi qadha`ahu wasallamna lillahi amrah
By Allah I swear, the calamity of losing you is the ever most catastrophic for the Muslims. fawallahi lam yusabil-muslimun bimithlika abada
You were haven, shelter, and unshakable fortress of the believers. kunta lil-mu`minina kahfan wa hisnan wa qunnatan rasiya
And you were, at the same time, rude and furious on the unbelievers. wa ‘alal-kafirina ghil¨atan wa ghayza
May Allah join you to His Prophet and may He never deprive us of the reward of our grief for you, and may He never mislead us after you. fa alhaqakal-lahu binabiyyihi wala haramana ajraka wala adhallana ba’dak
